Bowl waste

Threaded fitting connecting the outlet of a sink or basin to the trap and waste pipe.

A bowl waste is a threaded fitting that connects the outlet of a basin, sink or bath to the trap and waste pipework. UK wastes are manufactured to BS EN 274 and are available in slotted form for basins and baths with overflows and unslotted form for fittings without an overflow. Bowls and sinks normally have a 1.25 inch or 32mm thread for basins and 1.5 inch or 40mm thread for sinks and baths. Installation involves a rubber washer above and a fibre or rubber washer below the bowl, with a back nut tightened to compress the seal. Replacement of a leaking bowl waste is a common minor repair in older London bathrooms and kitchens, sometimes requiring careful removal of corroded chrome fittings to avoid damaging the ceramic.
