Wash basin

Sanitary fitting for washing hands and face with tap and waste connections.

A wash basin is a sanitary fitting used for washing hands and face, typically installed in bathrooms, cloakrooms and commercial washrooms. UK basins are manufactured to BS EN 14688, with standard sizes and tap hole arrangements suitable for monobloc, pillar or wall-mounted taps. The basin discharges through a slotted waste fitting and trap, with a minimum 32mm bore waste pipe complying with Building Regulations Part H1. Configurations include pedestal, semi-pedestal, wall-hung, vanity-mounted and countertop styles. Materials are most commonly vitreous china, but glass, stone resin and ceramic composite versions are also widely available. Replacement of a basin in older London bathrooms may require adaptation of existing waste runs to current minimum trap seal depths and gradient requirements.
