A bidet is a low ceramic basin used for intimate personal washing, supplied by hot and cold taps and discharged through a waste and trap. UK bidets are manufactured to BS EN 14528, with floor-mounted, wall-hung and over-rim or ascending spray configurations. Installation must comply with Building Regulations Part G and Part H1, and ascending spray bidets require Category 5 backflow protection under the Water Supply Fittings Regulations 1999. Bidets are less common in UK bathrooms than in continental Europe but remain a feature in higher specification London homes, hotels and serviced flats. Bidet shower or douche attachments mounted next to the WC are increasingly used as a space-saving alternative. Regular cleaning of the waste and trap reduces the risk of slow drainage from soap residues.
