Tap (mixer tap, pillar tap)

Valve fitting controlling the flow of water from the supply into a sink, basin or bath.

A tap is a valve fitting that controls the flow of water from the supply pipework into a sink, basin or bath. UK taps are manufactured to BS EN 200, BS EN 817 and the Water Regulations Approval Scheme product directory. Common formats include pillar taps with separate hot and cold spouts, two-handle deck mixers, monobloc lever mixers and wall-mounted versions. Mixer taps combine hot and cold supplies through a single spout, with thermostatic versions used for showers and baths to limit scald risk. Installation must comply with the Water Supply Fittings Regulations 1999 to prevent backflow into the drinking water supply. Replacement of corroded taps in older London bathrooms often requires careful access through pedestals or vanity units and may benefit from new flexible tails for easier connection.
