Drain locator (electronic)

Hand-held receiver used to detect signals from sondes and trace underground drain runs.

An electronic drain locator is a hand-held receiver that detects the radio signal emitted by a sonde placed inside a drain or an active mains cable. The receiver displays signal strength, depth and direction, allowing engineers to mark the route of the drain on the ground surface with paint, pegs or a digital plan. The locator is fundamental to no-dig drainage work, drain mapping surveys and pre-excavation utility checks across London. Used in combination with a CCTV camera and sonde, it confirms the exact position of defects identified during inspection under BS EN 13508-2. Findings inform the choice of repair method, whether patch lining, full length cured-in-place lining or excavation under BS EN 1610. The work is carried out by qualified engineers using calibrated equipment.
