Sonde receiver

Handheld receiver used to locate the position and depth of a sonde transmitter.

A sonde receiver is a handheld instrument used to pick up the low-frequency signal from a sonde transmitter and indicate its position and depth on the surface. Most modern units cover a range of frequencies and may include line tracing capability for tracking buried cables and other utilities. The operator walks above the drain, locating the peak signal strength and reading the depth on the display. Receivers should be calibrated periodically in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions to maintain depth accuracy. In central London, multiple buried utilities can interfere with the trace and a Cable Avoidance Tool (CAT) survey under PAS 128 may be required before any excavation. Sonde location is the foundation of accurate, low-cost spot repair planning.
