Drain odour mask

Respiratory mask worn to protect against drainage gas and aerosols.

A drain odour mask is a respiratory protective device, usually an FFP3 disposable mask or a half mask with combined particulate and gas filters, worn by engineers when working with foul drainage. The mask reduces inhalation of bioaerosols from sewage, hydrogen sulphide and other irritants encountered in chambers, wet wells and during clearance of fat or grease blockages. Selection of respiratory PPE follows a risk assessment under COSHH 2002 and the PPE at Work Regulations 2022, with mask type matching the expected exposure. Operators wearing tight-fitting masks must be face-fit tested under HSE OC 282/28, with the test record retained on file. Reusable masks must be cleaned and inspected after each use and filters changed in line with the manufacturer's instructions.
