Confined space gas monitor

Portable instrument that detects toxic and flammable gases in confined spaces.

A confined space gas monitor is a portable instrument carried by engineers entering inspection chambers, wet wells and other confined spaces to detect dangerous atmospheres. Four-gas units measure oxygen depletion, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulphide and lower explosive limit of flammable gases. The unit alarms audibly and visibly when readings exceed pre-set thresholds. Use of a calibrated gas monitor is mandatory before and during entry under the Confined Space Regulations 1997. Operators must follow a written safe system of work, including ventilation, communication and emergency rescue arrangements. Monitors require bump testing before each use and full calibration at intervals set by the manufacturer, typically every six months. Logged readings should be retained as part of the project's safety records.
