A pole camera is a high-resolution camera mounted on a telescopic pole used for above-ground or open chamber visual inspection without the operator entering a confined space. Typical poles extend from 1.8 to 10 metres, with the camera providing live video to a handheld monitor and integrated stills capture. Pole cameras are widely used to check the inside of manholes, drop shafts, gully pots and roof outlets from a safe position. The technique helps engineers comply with the Confined Space Regulations 1997 by avoiding entry where a remote inspection answers the diagnostic question. Pole cameras are not a substitute for a full crawler or push-rod survey in pipework, but are a valuable first-line tool for routine condition checks and pre-survey reconnaissance on commercial sites.
