A CCTV drain survey uses a small waterproof camera attached to a flexible rod or self-propelled crawler to inspect the inside of drainage pipes. The camera transmits live video to a monitor, allowing qualified engineers to identify blockages, root ingress, cracks, displaced joints and collapsed sections. Surveys are typically carried out before purchasing a property, after recurring blockages or when planning major drainage works. The recorded footage provides documented evidence for insurance claims, party wall matters or homebuyer reports. Most modern surveys produce a written report referencing the WRc Manual of Sewer Condition Classification and BS EN 13508-2. While the method identifies most visible defects, it cannot detect structural weaknesses behind pipe walls, which may require additional pressure or load testing. CCTV inspection is now an industry-standard diagnostic step.
