A crawler camera is a self-propelled CCTV unit fitted with motorised wheels that travel along the invert of larger drains and sewers, transmitting high-quality video back to a control unit at the surface. Crawlers carry pan and tilt heads, integrated lighting, distance encoders and depth-rated cabling, allowing engineers to inspect long runs of pipework in detail. The system is typically used on lines 150mm diameter and above, including main sewers operated by Thames Water and large private drainage on commercial sites across London. Surveys are carried out in accordance with BS EN 13508-2 and the WRc Manual of Sewer Condition Classification. The footage supports detailed condition grading, planning of no-dig repairs under BS EN ISO 11296 and adoption assessment under Sewers for Adoption guidance.
