A safety winch is a mechanical winch mounted to a confined space tripod or davit arm and used for controlled descent into and rescue from a chamber or wet well. The winch is rated for man-riding loads in accordance with EN 1496, providing a fail-safe brake and emergency lifting capability under load. Cable lengths typically range from 15 to 30 metres for drainage applications, with stainless steel rope to resist corrosion in damp environments. Use of a rescue winch is a standard control measure under the Confined Space Regulations 1997, alongside a tripod, harness and gas monitor. Winches must be subject to thorough examination at intervals not exceeding twelve months under LOLER 1998 and the inspection records kept available with the equipment for the duration of works.
