A confined space harness is a full body harness designed for use during entry into and rescue from confined spaces such as manholes, wet wells and tanks. It typically has front, dorsal and shoulder D rings allowing the wearer to be attached to a fall arrester for descent and to a winch for vertical rescue. Harnesses must comply with EN 361 and EN 1497 and be inspected before each use for cuts, abrasion, contamination and webbing damage. A thorough examination by a competent person is required at least every twelve months and the harness records kept with the unit. Use is mandatory under the Confined Space Regulations 1997 and the Work at Height Regulations 2005, alongside other control measures including atmospheric monitoring and a rescue plan.
