Personal protective equipment (PPE)

Clothing and equipment worn to protect engineers from drainage work hazards.

Personal protective equipment for drainage work covers eye, hand, foot, head, respiratory and body protection used to protect engineers from biological, chemical, mechanical and atmospheric hazards. Typical PPE includes safety glasses, cut-resistant gloves, steel toe-cap boots, high-visibility outerwear, hard hats, FFP3 face masks and disposable coveralls for foul environments. PPE must be selected following a risk assessment for the specific task, in accordance with the PPE at Work Regulations 2022 and CDM 2015. Equipment must be CE or UKCA marked, properly maintained and replaced when worn. Refresher training on correct fit and limitations of PPE is part of operator competence, and used PPE that has been in contact with sewage should be disposed of as clinical waste in accordance with local arrangements.
