Diamond core drill

Powered drill with a diamond-tipped core bit used to cut through masonry.

A diamond core drill is a powered drill fitted with a cylindrical diamond-tipped bit used to cut clean circular holes through masonry, concrete, brick and tiled finishes. In drainage work it is used to drill through walls and slabs to introduce new soil pipes, vent connections, gully outlets and pumped discharges. Diameter ranges from 32mm to 200mm or more, with bit selection matching the pipe and any sleeve to be installed. Water suppression is essential to control silica dust under COSHH 2002, and a residual current device protects against electrical hazards in damp conditions. Operators should be trained on the unit and follow CDM 2015 working at height precautions where the drilling location is elevated above the working platform.
