Drum machine (electric)

Drum-style electric drain cleaning machine with continuous cable in a rotating drum.

A drum machine is an electrically powered drain cleaning machine in which a continuous length of steel cable is held in a rotating drum. The cable is fed out as it spins, with cutters or augers on the end working through blockages in pipes from 40mm to 150mm diameter. Drum machines are popular in domestic and light commercial drainage work as the cable storage system protects the operator and reduces snagging risk. Typical drums hold 15 to 30 metres of cable. The machine should be operated with foot or remote switch control and the operator must wear cut-resistant gloves, in accordance with PUWER 1998 and manufacturer training. Cable should be inspected after each job for kinks, corrosion and shedding strands that indicate end of useful life.
