A high-pressure water jetter, often shortened to HPW, is a machine that delivers water at pressures of 2,000 to 5,000 psi at flow rates of 15 to 250 litres per minute through specialist nozzles for drain cleaning, descaling and root cutting. The unit consists of a positive displacement pump, water tank, engine or electric motor and a hose reel typically carrying 60 to 120 metres of hose. Trailer-mounted, van-pack and portable versions cover applications from domestic 32mm waste pipes up to 600mm public sewers. Operators must be trained in line with the Water Jetting Association Code of Practice and the equipment maintained in accordance with PUWER 1998. Periodic inspection of hoses, fittings and pressure relief systems is essential to safe operation.
