Georgian property

Period property built between 1714 and 1830, often listed and with replaced drainage.

A Georgian property is a building constructed between 1714 and 1830, characterised by symmetrical facades, sash windows and classical proportions. In London, Georgian properties are particularly concentrated in Westminster, Camden (Bloomsbury and Fitzrovia) and parts of Islington, with many designated Grade II or Grade II* listed. Drainage characteristics vary considerably, as original brick or stoneware drains have usually been replaced over the centuries, often with cast iron in the Victorian era and PVC-U more recently. Common issues include unmapped historical alterations, multiple legacy connections of different materials and original brick sewers running beneath listed elevations. Listed Building Consent is required for most works affecting the building fabric, and conservation officers may restrict external pipe materials and colours. CCTV surveys are essential before purchase to identify hidden drainage anomalies that may affect insurance cover.
