Slip lining

Inserting a smaller diameter pipe inside an existing damaged drain.

Slip lining installs a new HDPE or PVC carrier pipe of smaller diameter inside an existing damaged drain, with the annulus between the two pipes grouted to provide structural support. The technique is straightforward, robust and well suited to long, straight runs of larger diameter pipe such as adopted sewers, including some inherited Thames Water assets in older Greater London boroughs. The trade-off is that the internal diameter and hydraulic capacity are reduced, which may not be acceptable in residential lateral drains. Slip lining should be carried out in accordance with BS EN ISO 11296-1 and confirmed by post-installation CCTV. Pre-cleaning of the host pipe is essential to ensure the carrier pipe slides smoothly without becoming snagged on internal protrusions.
