Smoke generator (drain)

Device that pushes coloured smoke through drains to identify cross-connections and leaks.

A drain smoke generator pushes coloured non-toxic smoke through the drainage system to identify illegal cross-connections, defective vents and open joints that allow smoke to escape into rooms or onto the ground above. The unit consists of a smoke fluid or pellet source and an electric blower that pressurises the pipework gently. Smoke testing is widely used to investigate sewer odour complaints in London flats, on commercial sites with suspected cross-connections, and to verify integrity of new and replacement drainage. The test is conducted in accordance with BS EN 1610 air testing principles and operators must give notice to neighbouring property occupiers so they are not alarmed by visible smoke. The smoke fluid used should be non-staining and ideally fragrance-free.
