Belfast sink (Butler sink)

Deep ceramic kitchen sink with a rectangular bowl traditionally used in utility areas.

A Belfast sink is a deep rectangular ceramic sink with a built-in overflow, traditionally used in kitchens, utility rooms and pantries across the UK. The closely related Butler sink omits the overflow and is generally shallower. Both are made from vitreous china or fireclay and finished in a robust glaze. UK sinks of this type follow the general requirements of BS EN 695. They are valued for their period appearance and durability, making them a popular choice in restored Victorian and Edwardian London kitchens. The substantial weight requires a strong support frame fitted within the base unit. Standard waste fittings are 1.5 inches or 90mm, and a chrome basket strainer is the traditional option. Care should be taken to avoid dropping heavy items, which can chip the glaze.
