Drainer (draining board)

Grooved surface alongside a kitchen sink allowing washed items to drip dry into the bowl.

A drainer or draining board is the grooved surface fitted alongside a kitchen sink that allows washed crockery and utensils to drip dry while the water runs back into the bowl. Drainers are usually integral to stainless steel and ceramic sinks but are also available as separate worktop accessories in timber, glass or composite materials. UK kitchen sinks with drainers follow the general dimensional standards of BS EN 695. Single drainer sinks have a bowl and one drainer, while double drainer arrangements provide drainers on both sides of the bowl, popular in larger kitchens. The drainer surface should be lightly sloped towards the bowl to avoid standing water and possible damage to the supporting worktop. Surrounding seals should be inspected regularly for damage.
