A plunger drain rod tip is a 100mm diameter rubber or polypropylene disc that screws onto a Lockfast rod set to create pressure pulses inside the pipe. The operator pushes the disc forwards and backwards against the blockage, creating localised pressure waves that dislodge soft material such as wet wipes, paper and silt. It is most effective in straight 100mm pipework where the disc maintains a near-perfect seal. Plunger tips are commonly used as a first response by domestic engineers before deciding whether to escalate to electro-mechanical cleaning or jetting. Excess force should be avoided since trapped pressure can blow a downstream trap on an internal fitting and cause an unexpected discharge into a basement or flat.
