A Lockfast drain rod is a polypropylene drain rod with a positive bayonet-style coupling at each end, which is much less prone to unscrewing as the rod is rotated inside the pipe. Each rod is typically 3 feet (about 0.9 metres) long, with a complete set extending to around 30 metres. The bayonet design addresses the principal failure mode of older screw-thread rods, which could detach underground and leave a section irretrievable inside the drain. Lockfast rods are widely carried in London domestic drainage vans as a first-line clearance tool. Sets should be inspected for cracked couplings, worn locking pins and split shafts before each job, since failed couplings remain the most common cause of lost rods in the pipework.
