A drain wand is a rigid hose attachment, typically 600mm to 1.2 metres long, used to direct pressurised water into downpipes, gullies and bath traps to flush soft debris. Most units use a quick connect coupling to a domestic outside tap or a low-pressure jetter and finish in a directional nozzle. Drain wands are useful as a first-step diagnostic flush before deploying a high-pressure jetter, and for maintenance flushing of gutters and rainwater systems on suburban London properties. They are not high-pressure tools and so do not require Water Jetting Association certification to use. Water used from a domestic supply must be protected from back-siphonage in accordance with the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999, typically via a Type AA or AB air gap.
