A drinking fountain, also known as a water bubbler, is a wall or pedestal mounted fitting that provides a controlled stream of drinking water in public, educational, healthcare and commercial settings. UK drinking fountains follow BS EN 1717 and the Water Supply Fittings Regulations 1999, including specific requirements to prevent backflow contamination. Drainage from the fountain is conveyed through a small waste and trap to the foul system in line with Building Regulations Part H1. Drinking fountains have become more common in London parks, schools and offices as part of efforts to reduce single-use plastic bottle consumption. Some modern designs include bottle filling spouts and chilled or filtered water as well as the traditional bubbler outlet. Regular cleaning and periodic disinfection of nozzles helps maintain water quality.
