A toilet seat is a hinged seat and lid assembly fixed to the rim of a WC pan to provide a comfortable and hygienic surface for the user. UK seats follow BS EN 19694 and dimensional standards in BS 1254, with fixings designed to suit standard pan hole spacings. Materials include moulded thermoset plastic, thermoplastic and wooden seats with chrome or stainless steel hinges. Soft-close hinges are increasingly common to reduce noise and wear. Replacement is usually straightforward, although fixings under the rim of older London Victorian pans can be difficult to access. Damaged or cracked seats should be replaced promptly because broken edges and worn hinges are a frequent cause of minor injuries in the home. Antibacterial finishes are common in commercial settings.
