A toilet pan, also known as a WC pan, is the ceramic bowl of a toilet that receives waste and channels it to the soil pipe via an integral trap. UK toilet pans are manufactured to BS EN 33 and BS EN 997, which set out dimensional and flushing performance criteria. Common configurations include close-coupled, low-level, high-level and back-to-wall versions, each offering a different visual style and installation arrangement. The trap is typically a P or S configuration cast into the body of the pan, providing the water seal that prevents drain odours. Installation must comply with Building Regulations Part G for water use, with most new pans designed for a 4 or 6 litre flush. Replacement of damaged or cracked pans is a common refurbishment task in older London bathrooms.
