Wet room

Fully waterproofed bathroom with an open shower area and a floor drain.

A wet room is a fully waterproofed bathroom in which the entire floor and lower walls are tanked, with a shower area that drains directly through a floor outlet rather than into a separate tray. UK wet rooms are constructed in line with BS 8000-11 for tiling, BS EN 14891 for waterproofing membranes and Building Regulations Part H1 for waste connections. The floor is laid with carefully calculated falls of 1 in 35 to 1 in 50 towards the drain. Wet rooms are popular in London flat refurbishments where space is limited and an easy access shower is desired, including for older or less mobile occupants. Correct waterproofing is critical, and any failure can lead to significant damage in flats below. Specialist installation is generally recommended for wet rooms in upper-floor flats.
