Pop-up waste

Waste fitting with a plug operated by a lever or click mechanism for hands-free use.

A pop-up waste is a basin or bath waste fitting in which the plug is operated by a mechanism rather than a separate plug and chain. UK wastes follow BS EN 274 for performance and dimensions and are available in lever-operated, click-clack push and remote pull-rod versions. The mechanism allows users to fill and empty the fitting without contact with potentially contaminated water, which is particularly useful in shared washrooms. Pop-up wastes are now standard on most new basins in London bathrooms because they look tidier than plug and chain alternatives. Common faults include sticking plugs, loose locknuts and worn seals, all of which can usually be addressed by cleaning or replacing individual components. Slotted versions are required where the basin has an integral overflow.
