A slop hopper is a heavy duty sanitary fitting used in hospitals, care homes and similar settings for the disposal of soiled liquids and the cleaning of bedpans, commode pots and similar items. UK slop hoppers are manufactured to BS EN 14688 and BS EN 997 and are typically made from vitreous china or stainless steel with a flushing rim, grating and large bore trap. They are often part of a wider dirty utility room or sluice room arrangement, in line with Health Technical Memorandum HTM 64 guidance from NHS England. Installation must comply with Building Regulations Part H1 and Part G, with separate hand washing facilities provided nearby. Slop hoppers are sometimes combined with bedpan washers or macerators to provide hygienic disposal in line with infection control protocols.
