A solder joint, also called a capillary fitting, is a method of joining copper pipework in which molten solder is drawn into a closely fitting socket by capillary action when heat is applied. UK solder fittings are manufactured to BS EN 1254 and are available as either solder ring versions with integral lead-free solder or end feed versions where solder is added during installation. Lead-free alloys must be used on drinking water systems in line with the Water Supply Fittings Regulations 1999. Solder joints offer a neat, low-profile and durable connection, which is particularly valued in concealed positions. Hot works require precautions against fire risk, especially in older London properties with timber framing. Capillary jointing is a core skill for any qualified UK plumber.
